The Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL), whose roster includes Latvian forwards Uvis Balinskis and Sandis Vilmanis, have announced a significant trade. The Panthers have acquired forward Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for multiple draft picks.
As part of the deal, the Senators receive four draft picks, including two first-round selections in this year's draft. Tkachuk spent the previous eight seasons with Ottawa, serving as team captain for the last five. This season, he recorded 59 points (22 goals and 37 assists) in 60 regular-season games. In the Stanley Cup playoffs first round, the Senators were swept 0-4 by the Carolina Hurricanes, with Tkachuk going pointless.
With the Panthers, Brady Tkachuk will join his brother Matthew Tkachuk, who has played for Florida since 2022. It is expected that the two brothers will form the team's top forward line. Last season, the Panthers finished 14th in the Eastern Conference with 84 points in 82 games, missing the playoffs.
Earlier, the Panthers had intended to select defenseman Alberts Šmits, a promising Latvian player, in the draft. However, after winning the ninth overall pick in the draft lottery—likely too low to land Šmits—the team used those pick rights in this trade.
