Sunderland have secured the transfer of Malick Fofana from Lyon, with the deal reported to be worth £30m. The club edged out Crystal Palace in the race to sign the 21-year-old forward, who has agreed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light. Fofana becomes Sunderland's fifth signing of the summer and was confirmed on deadline day, alongside centre-back Kevin Danso. The new arrivals are expected to strengthen the squad ahead of the club's first European campaign since 1973.

Florent Ghisolfi, Sunderland's Director of Football, said Fofana possesses the qualities needed to succeed in the Premier League. Ghisolfi described him as a player with huge potential, adding that the club would provide the right environment for his development. He also noted that Fofana operates on the left side and would complement the versatility of Sunderland's other wide attackers.

Fofana started his career at KAA Gent before making the switch to Ligue 1 side Lyon in 2024. At Sunderland, he joins a group of other summer additions, including defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, and midfielder Jules Ahoka. The Black Cats finished seventh in their first season back in the English top flight, booking their spot in European competition. After losing their opening league match at Ipswich, Sunderland bounced back with a win over Fulham on Sunday.
