In the early hours of Sunday, July 5, the French national team beat Paraguay 1-0 in a round of 16 match at the World Cup being held in North America. The only goal was scored by Kylian Mbappé, who converted a penalty.

The winning goal came in the 70th minute in Philadelphia. Mbappé's penalty was awarded after a foul on Désiré Doué. The goal was the 27-year-old's 19th in World Cup final tournaments, putting him one goal behind the current record holder, Argentina's Lionel Messi.

Mbappé also became the first player to score in the round of 16 in three consecutive World Cups.

According to statistics, Paraguay did not manage a single shot on target in the match. The game saw many clashes, with players sometimes acting quite roughly.

After the match, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill wanted to shake Mbappé's hand, but the French captain ignored him and began celebrating the victory. Gill then threw the ball towards Mbappé, hitting him in the back. Mbappé did not react.

France advanced to the quarterfinals and will face Morocco in Foxborough on July 9. Morocco beat Canada 3-0 in their round of 16 match.
