From the southwest to Burgundy, temperatures in France are forecast to climb to 39 or 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with some areas possibly hitting 41°C, according to meteorologists.
Following an emergency government meeting, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu banned alcohol consumption at the annual music festival "Fête de la Musique" and other public events in 35 regions expected to experience the worst heat. Paris authorities have decided to keep parks and gardens open around the clock to help residents cool off.
Heat warnings have also been issued across much of Germany, where temperatures are nearing 38°C. Meteorologists forecast strong thunderstorms there. Italy and Spain are also experiencing scorching heat, affecting daily life and tourism in many cities.
Scientists say that due to climate change, heatwaves across Europe are becoming more frequent and intense, increasing various health risks.
