Hundreds of thousands of people have marched across France. The protests began among high-school pupils, but they have since spread to their parents, university students and trade unions.

March in Paris

Crowds of teenagers set off from the Place de la République in Paris. The demonstrators called for more resources for schools and for what they described as less repression from the police.

Clashes with police

In Lyon, protesters clashed with police. Officers used tear gas in Paris and Marseille, and water cannon in Rennes. Even so, there was little of the serious trouble that marred earlier protests.

Report from the scene

The BBC's Europe correspondent Nick Beake reported on the events from Lille. What started as a protest by school pupils has now drawn in a much broader part of society, with demonstrations held in a number of French cities.
