French publishers complain about Google's AI search summaries
France's press publishers association APIG has asked the competition regulator to check whether Google's new AI summary feature breaches a 2022 agreement on compensating media outlets.

The French publishers' association APIG has raised concerns over "AI Overviews," a feature Google rolled out in France in late July that displays an AI-generated summary above regular search results, drawing on content from multiple sources.
Possible breach of commitments
APIG has asked France's competition authority to verify whether Google is honoring commitments it made in 2022 to compensate French media for the use of their content. According to the association, Google introduced the new AI-generated summaries without publishers' consent, and the move may conflict with the earlier agreement.
Not against innovation, but for fair pay
The association stresses that publishers are not seeking to block innovation, but want fair compensation for the use of their content.
Prior penalty
In 2024, France's competition regulator already fined Google 250 million euros for failing to meet conditions on paying media companies for their content. Critics argue that AI-generated summaries harm publishers by reducing traffic to original articles, as many users choose not to click through to the source.
