French media group files complaint against Google's AI-generated search summaries

The French press publishers association APIG announced on Tuesday that it has filed a formal complaint with the country's competition regulator against a new feature from internet giant Google that uses artificial intelligence to generate summaries of search results.

Concerns over declining website traffic

The association warns that these AI-generated summaries could significantly reduce the number of users who go on to visit the original newspaper websites. When search results already display a summary of the content, users may see no need to click through to the source to get the information they need.

Such a shift would pose a direct financial threat to press publishers, whose revenues largely depend on website traffic and the advertising income tied to it.

APIG's complaint asks France's competition authority to examine whether Google's practice creates unfair competition conditions, given the company's already dominant position in the search services market.
