French Court to Decide Le Pen's Political Future; Bardella Poised as Alternative

A French appeals court will decide today on Marine Le Pen's political future, reviewing an earlier conviction for embezzling EU funds. If the verdict is upheld, Le Pen also faces a five-year ban from holding office, which would effectively end her presidential dream. In that case, the 30-year-old Jordan Bardella could step in as the presidential candidate for the National Rally (RN). Although Bardella is considered more moderate, his policy on the EU remains as radical as Le Pen's, focusing on strengthening national sovereignty. An analysis is provided by Marion Solletty of POLITICO Playbook Paris.

The podcast also features an interview with Diana Zimmer, foreign policy spokesperson for Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD), who discusses the difficult relationship with French right-wing populists. Despite policy differences and Bardella's public distancing, Zimmer emphasizes shared patriotic goals such as protecting national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, at the NATO summit in Ankara, the defense industry takes center stage. European allies plan to purchase additional military equipment worth $120 billion, with about half going to U.S. industry—a move likely to please Donald Trump, who is also expected at the summit.
