A clash of two winless sides

Venezia hosted Fiorentina in the fourth round of Serie A with both clubs still searching for their first points of the 2026-27 season. Fiorentina had lost all three of their opening matches, including a 4-0 defeat to Roma and a 2-1 home loss to Torino, while newly promoted Venezia had fallen to Lecce, Milan and Frosinone. The match also marked the return of coach Paolo Vanoli to the Fiorentina bench, brought back after the club dismissed Fabio Grosso.

Adams puts Venezia ahead, Mastantuono responds twice

Venezia took an early lead around the 21st-22nd minute (sources differ slightly on the exact minute), with Akor Adams finishing off a move involving Busio down the right. But Fiorentina turned the game around before half-time. Franco Mastantuono equalised with a precise strike from outside the box, then added a second barely a minute later after a pass from Beto — according to MARCA, the two goals came just one minute and 36 seconds apart, in the 29th and 30th minutes, while other sources place them in the 28th and 29th minutes.

A third and fourth goal seal the show

Fiorentina kept control after the break. In the 65th-66th minute, Mateo Pellegrino, set up by Fagioli, made it 1-3. Mastantuono then completed his hat-trick around the 83rd-84th minute, beating Venezia goalkeeper Stankovic after a pass from Ndour to make it 1-4. Venezia pulled one back shortly after, in the 85th-86th minute, when Antoine Hainaut converted a cross from Haps to beat Fiorentina goalkeeper De Gea, setting the final score at 2-4. Mastantuono was substituted in the 88th minute, replaced by Brescianini.

What it means

According to Diario AS, Mastantuono had taken 10 shots without scoring across Fiorentina's first three Serie A matches, making this hat-trick his first goals in Italian football and for the club. The win gave Fiorentina their first three points of the season, while Venezia remain winless and at the bottom of the table.
