Freedom Park in Virginia Preserves History of One of the Earliest Free Black Communities

At first glance, Freedom Park in Williamsburg, Virginia, looks like an ordinary nature getaway — mountain bikers ride its trails, families picnic under pine trees, and birdsong fills the air instead of traffic noise. But the site holds a far deeper history than its playgrounds and hiking paths suggest.
An Early Free Black Settlement
The park was once home to one of the earliest known free Black settlements in colonial Virginia. Its origins date back to the early 19th century, when plantation owner William Ludwell Lee freed his enslaved workers upon his death and granted them tracts of land on his property.
From 1803 to 1860, families in the community built farms, established churches, raised children, and sustained a settlement that lasted for generations. Historians now consider it one of the nation's earliest documented free Black communities.
Recreation Meets History
Thanks to the efforts of historians, descendants, and advocates, Freedom Park now honors this history through exhibits and educational signage. A Virginia historical marker near the entrance introduces visitors to the settlement's story. Alongside the hiking and cycling trails, exhibits explore the lives of the community's early Black landowners and their descendants, including reconstructions of their homes.
Rather than treating recreation and history as separate experiences, the park encourages visitors to engage with both simultaneously — turning a simple morning hike into a chance to reflect on whose footsteps came before.
