FSB says it detained foreign national over drone reconnaissance of Moscow train station
Russia's FSB says it has detained a foreign citizen in the Murmansk region on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack in Moscow on orders from Ukrainian security services. The agency claims the man used a drone to scout a train station and administrative buildings before trying to cross into Norway.
Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced the detention of a foreign national suspected of preparing a terrorist attack in Moscow allegedly on instructions from Ukrainian security services.
According to the agency, the man traveled to Moscow and used a drone to conduct reconnaissance at one of the capital's train stations. His targets reportedly included freight trains carrying petroleum products as well as administrative buildings in the city center.
He then went to the Murmansk region, where he allegedly intended to cross the border into Norway, but was detained for violating rules governing entry into the border zone.
Statement in FSB video
In footage released by the FSB, the detained man, who speaks Russian with a noticeable accent, says that between 2023 and 2026 he submitted an application to join Ukraine's territorial defense forces and also made contact via Telegram with an organization supporting Ukraine. He described himself as having expertise in drones, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
Separate case from June
The FSB also said that in June it detained eight people suspected of planning an attack on a strategic defense facility in the Moscow region. According to the agency, the group intended to use 35 explosive-laden FPV drones that had been smuggled in from European Union countries.
