FunnyPlaying's FPGB Mini is a smaller, cheaper cartridge-playing Game Boy clone
Chinese company FunnyPlaying has released the FPGB Mini handheld, which plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges and undercuts Analogue's Pocket on both size and price.
FunnyPlaying, a Chinese company known for its Game Boy and GBA upgrade kits, has announced a new handheld called the FPGB Mini that can play original Nintendo cartridges as well as ROMs. Unlike the Analogue Pocket, which also supports Game Boy Advance and Sega Game Gear cartridges, the FPGB Mini's cartridge support is limited to Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.
Smaller size, lower price
What makes the FPGB Mini appealing despite its narrower compatibility is its size and cost. The device is only slightly wider than a Game Boy cartridge itself, making it an extremely pocketable option. Following recent price increases, the Analogue Pocket now costs $239.99, while the FPGB Mini's first batch of just 20 units sold out at a discounted price of $69.99, down from its regular $89.99.
Specifications
Like the Pocket, the FPGB Mini relies on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to reproduce Game Boy and GBC gameplay with the same accuracy as Nintendo's original hardware. It features a 2.98-inch, 800x720-pixel LCD display, an 1,800mAh rechargeable battery, and a microSD card slot for storing save files, screenshots, or ROMs for emulation. The handheld's compact design means it cannot accommodate cartridges with rumble motors or other added hardware.
According to Retro Dodo, which has spent several days testing the device, FunnyPlaying is considering releasing additional units following some hardware improvements, since the first batch has already sold out.
