G7 leaders to meet Zelensky as Trump signals possible Ukraine breakthrough
G7 leaders will hold a special session with Ukraine's President Zelensky on Tuesday. US President Trump expressed optimism about possible progress, while Zelensky urged a firm response after Russian strikes on Kyiv.

G7 leaders are set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a special morning session dedicated to Ukraine at the summit in the French spa town of Evian. Later on Tuesday, a session on Iran will be attended by Arab leaders.
US President Donald Trump arrived at the summit on Monday expressing optimism, saying "maybe we can do something" regarding the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year. Trump noted he had "two very good conversations" with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that both sides are open to talks.
Zelensky urged the G7 leaders to provide a "decisive and substantive" response following the latest wave of Russian strikes that killed at least 11 people and sparked a fire at a historic Kyiv cathedral. He revealed he had proposed a meeting with Putin at the G7, but Moscow was not ready.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced ahead of the session that the UK would supply enriched uranium to Ukraine for its nuclear power plants and impose new sanctions on Russia. Starmer condemned Russia's "barbaric strikes" and said the UK is stepping up support.
Some analysts say recent battlefield successes have shifted the balance in Ukraine's favor and urge the West to maintain support for Kyiv.
The summit will also include a special session on Iran, attended by Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Emir of Qatar, and the UAE President. Trump said his deal with Iran will mean the Strait of Hormuz fully opens on Friday. He was cool on a proposed British-French military mission to ensure free passage.
A parade of world leaders is taking place over the three-day summit, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
