Gailītis Restores Hope for Latvian National Team, but Road to World Cup Remains Tough

After wins over the Netherlands and Austria, Latvia's basketball team has advanced to the second qualifying round for the World Cup, but history shows teams with a 3-3 record rarely reach the final tournament. Ahead lie matches against Germany, Croatia, and Israel.

Just a few months ago, Latvia's path to the FIBA World Cup was on a dangerous edge. Three losses in four games, a change of head coach, and a situation where every next defeat could prove fatal. However, the summer window changed the mood – under the guidance of Jānis Gailītis, the national team saved its first task and returned to the fight for a ticket to Qatar.

Victories over the Netherlands and a crushing win against Austria in Riga allowed Latvia to reach the second qualification round, but it won't get easier. Ahead lie the current world and European champion Germany, strong Croatia, and unpredictable Israel. History shows that teams starting the second round with a 3-3 record rarely reach the final tournament.

Latvia's "dream summer" a few years ago proved that this team can break predictions and surprise the basketball world. Now a similar breakthrough is needed – the ticket to the World Cup is still attainable, but the margin for error has practically run out.
