Gailītis Compares Win Over Netherlands to Heavy Metal
Latvia's basketball team defeated the Netherlands 72-69, but coach Jānis Gailītis called it 'heavy metal' rather than a symphony, praising the team's character despite a lackluster first quarter.

The Latvian men's national basketball team secured a victory in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers on Saturday, beating the Netherlands 72-69. Head coach Jānis Gailītis was critical of the performance, using a musical analogy in his post-game remarks.
He stated the game was not a 'beautiful symphony' but rather 'suffering and heavy metal,' emphasizing it was a character fight. Gailītis was particularly critical of the first quarter, where the team lacked aggression and energy. He admitted his disappointment and noted that his timeout speech had gone viral online.
The coach highlighted that the key to victory was the shot selection late in the game—Latvia attempted free throws while the Netherlands took three-pointers. He praised Artūrs Žagars for his composure in the final minutes, saying he did not take difficult shots but looked for good solutions. Žagars demonstrated leadership qualities.
Latvia will conclude the first phase of the World Cup qualifiers on Monday, hosting Austria at home.
