The National Library of Latvia, often called the Castle of Light, has opened a new exhibition titled «The Language of Power – Agitation, Propaganda, Art», dedicated to the history and evolution of political posters.

The opening comes as Latvia approaches its Saeima parliamentary elections scheduled for October, making the theme of political communication and its visual expression particularly timely.

Over a century of history

Visitors can view posters created across different historical periods—from works made more than a hundred years ago to relatively recent political visual propaganda from around two decades ago.

Purpose of the exhibition

The organizers aim to show the public how political slogans, symbols and color choices have changed over the years. At the same time, the exhibition reveals what has remained constant in political agitation and propaganda despite the decades separating the different posters.

The exhibition offers visitors a chance to compare approaches to political communication across different eras and to better understand how visual art has historically been used to convey power and ideology.
