A 90-year-old woman who was shot during the terror attack at Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia, has died in hospital almost 12 months after the massacre. Eva Geller was wounded on 14 December, and a senior Jewish community source confirmed her death on Friday.

According to the source, Geller had been in and out of hospital this year for treatment of injuries from the attack. She had recently returned after developing an infection and died there following a stroke. Her funeral is scheduled for Monday. A family spokesperson asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Response from police and politicians

New South Wales state police said they were aware of the death. A spokesperson said officers were awaiting further advice and working with the office of the coroner.

NSW premier Chris Minns called the news heartbreaking and said his thoughts were with Geller's family and the Jewish community as they face another painful loss. State opposition leader Kellie Sloane, whose Vaucluse electorate includes Bondi beach, said the death was a reminder of the ongoing pain many people still feel after last year's attack. She urged continued support for the Jewish community, first responders and all victims.

The attack

The shooting took place at a Hanukkah festival at Bondi beach. It was carried out by Naveed Akram, 24, and his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram. Fifteen people died and 40 were injured. Sajid was shot dead by police at the scene.

Naveed has been charged with 78 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act, which investigators allege may have been inspired by Isis. His case remains before the courts.
