New pedestrian and cycling path being built along A7 between Iecava and Zorģi
Construction of a new pedestrian and cycling path along the A7 highway between Iecava and Zorģi is progressing rapidly, with part of the route already paved. Local residents say they are eagerly awaiting completion, as it will let them travel safely away from the busy road.
Work is progressing intensively on a new pedestrian and cycling path along the A7 highway between Iecava and Zorģi. Crews are currently installing drainage and embankment work, as well as access points and road crossings near bus stops. Part of the route has already been paved, and some local residents have already tried it out in the evenings.
The project was commissioned by state road authority VSIA "Latvijas valsts ceļi," which says the new path will significantly improve safety on this busy stretch of highway. Construction is being carried out by SIA "Vianova," whose representative says barriers will be installed and slopes reinforced with stone in August. Work is on schedule, though the heavy traffic on the A7 and summer heat have both posed challenges.
Safety measures
A speed limit of 50 to 70 km/h applies within the construction zone, with traffic in places directed by traffic lights, flaggers, and priority signs. Police stopped several drivers along this stretch last week for possibly exceeding the speed limit.
The new path will have an asphalt-concrete surface, mostly running alongside the road on the same base, separated by a gravel verge and raised safety barriers. Pedestrian and cycling crossings have been built at junctions and intersections, and the road surface has been changed near bus stops. No other similar pedestrian and cycling infrastructure projects are planned in Bauska municipality this year or next.
Residents eagerly await completion
Both Zorģi and Iecava residents view the new infrastructure positively, noting it will allow safe travel by bicycle, scooter, or on foot without needing to risk walking along the busy roadside. They particularly welcome the new road crossings near bus stops, as well as the opportunity for young people to travel independently between Zorģi and Iecava.
The new path is 3.38 km long and 2.25 m wide, running along the A7 from kilometer 45.12 to 48.5. The contract value is €1,337,544.9 including VAT, the project is funded by an EU fund, and a five-year warranty applies once it is put into operation.
