A tragic drowning occurred last Sunday at Garciems beach, claiming the life of a 40-year-old man. The incident happened amid strong winds and unpredictable currents. A local resident named Jurģis, who was swimming with his children that day, reported that the waves suddenly became strange and a strong pull was felt. He immediately took his children out of the water and returned home.

Later, the drowned man was recovered from the same spot by Jurģis's neighbor. It turned out that the victim drowned in relatively shallow water, where the depth was not above head level. The neighbor had also noticed the waves turning hazardous.

The news program 'Degpunktā' explained that the danger at sea often comes from rip currents, which are common in the Baltic Sea. To escape such a current, one should swim parallel to the shore rather than against it. Locals urge everyone to assess conditions carefully and exercise caution before entering the water.
