An Island in Lake of the Woods

Garden Island State Recreation Area is a Minnesota state recreation area located on an island in Lake of the Woods. For most of the year, it can only be accessed by boat. In winter, when the lake freezes, visitors can reach the island by snowmobile or other vehicles safely traveling on the ice.

Uninhabited Island for Nature Lovers

The island is uninhabited. Most people go there to fish, relax, or hike. The area includes a picnic area and a shelter with an emergency phone for those caught in bad weather. However, it is uncertain whether the emergency phone can be relied upon.

Crossing Borders

While traveling on the lake, be aware that you may drift into Canada. International borders require reporting to the country you are entering. Visitors must carry a passport, passport card, or enhanced driver's license when crossing over, and must report again when crossing back.
