Getzlaf to Serve as Coach for Canada's U20 Team
Former NHL star Ryan Getzlaf will join Canada's U20 coaching staff for the first time as an assistant, bringing his extensive experience to the junior squad.
Ryan Getzlaf, who played 17 seasons and 1,157 games in the NHL, scoring 282 goals and 1,019 points, will be one of the coaches for Canada's Under-20 hockey team. This marks his first coaching role with any Canadian national team. Getzlaf served as captain of the Anaheim Ducks for 12 years and won the Stanley Cup in 2007.
Representing Canada, Getzlaf won gold at the U18 World Championship in 2003, gold at the U20 level in 2005, and Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014. He also won the World Cup in 2016 and earned a silver medal at the 2008 World Championship. Previously, he served as a player relations advisor for Canada at the Olympics, World Championships, and World Cup.
Canada's U20 head coach will be Misha Donskov, who led the senior team to a fourth-place finish at the World Championship in May. Donskov will also be the head coach for the senior team at the 2027 World Championship. Canada's junior team won bronze at the 2026 World Championship and finished fifth in 2025 and 2024.
The 2027 World U20 Championship will take place from December 26 to January 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Canada. Latvia's junior team will face Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, and Norway. The other group features Sweden, Finland, USA, Slovakia, and Germany.
