Geographer Gunta Kalvāne urges exploring nearby nature spots
Geographer Gunta Kalvāne recommends that Latvians pay more attention to local natural areas rather than distant exotic landscapes.

A call to look at local nature
In the Latvian Radio program "Zināmais nezināmajā" (The Known in the Unknown), geographer Gunta Kalvāne encouraged residents to visit nearby natural places more often. She pointed out that in the age of global information, people often know more about the Amazon rainforest than about their nearest forest, and more about lions on the savanna than about hares and foxes in local meadows.
Simply being in nature
Kalvāne emphasized that it is important to simply be in nature and experience it, rather than seeking distant destinations. She suggests starting with the nearest meadow, forest edge, riverbank, or seaside – places that are easily accessible and allow one to enjoy Latvia's natural diversity without long journeys.
