Gareth Southgate joins Kevin Sinfield's MND awareness run

Former England football manager Gareth Southgate has joined former rugby league player Kevin Sinfield for the latest stage of his physical challenge aimed at raising awareness and funds for motor neurone disease (MND).

MND is a life-shortening neurological condition affecting the nerves that control movement. It causes progressive muscle weakness, and while there is currently no cure, available treatments can help manage symptoms.

Jo Coker of the MND Association said Sinfield's fundraising events have become a turning point for the MND community. She noted that when Sinfield began his efforts, public awareness of the disease was very low, but the situation has changed dramatically over the past five years.

First day complete

The first day of the challenge concluded in the village of Shiptonthorpe. The next stage will take Sinfield into York, with stops planned at the University of York, the York Knights' stadium, York Minster and the racecourse, before finishing at Bishopthorpe Palace.

Sinfield said he was looking forward to recovery, including an ice bath and some food, after the first day's efforts. He also expressed gratitude for the support shown along the route, saying people had once again turned out in great numbers.

Funds raised through the challenge will be shared among several organisations, including the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, the My Name5 Doddie Foundation, the Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland and the Irish MND Association.
