Getliņi eko: landfill capacity may be exhausted within years

Under the most optimistic forecast, the landfill could reach its maximum capacity within the next decade. This situation is driven by a significant rise in waste generation. Over the last ten years, the average amount of waste produced per resident in Latvia has increased by roughly 100 kilograms annually. Such a trend poses serious challenges for the country's waste management system. The Getliņi landfill is one of the largest in Latvia and plays a crucial role in waste disposal. Company management is calling for solutions to reduce waste volumes and extend the landfill's operational lifespan. Current considerations include promoting waste sorting and expanding recycling capacities. Urgent action is needed to prevent a future waste management crisis.
