Gillian Anderson has faced criticism after a video emerged showing her telling a group of fans outside London's Soho Place theatre that they could not keep sitting in the front row during her performances. The Sex Education and X-Files star is currently playing the role of Martha, an unhappy wife, in Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

In the clip, Anderson told the fans that attending the show repeatedly and always sitting in the front row was distracting and would drive her mad. The fans, who did not appear on camera, were heard apologising in response.

Anderson's clarification

After the footage spread on TikTok, the 58-year-old actor posted a statement on social media explaining that the exchange was with women she has known for over two decades, asking the public not to direct negativity at them. She added that in such an intimate venue, performers can see audience members clearly, and front-row seating can occasionally be distracting. She closed her message on a positive note, thanking those attending the show.

Part of a wider pattern

Anderson's comments follow a string of similar incidents this year involving other stage actors. Cate Blanchett asked audiences not to film curtain calls during her National Theatre production. Rosamund Pike admonished an audience member for texting during her West End play. Cynthia Erivo halted her one-woman show after spotting someone illegally recording the performance. Other performers, including Lesley Manville, Andrew Scott, Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, have also voiced concerns about declining theatre etiquette, particularly around phone use during curtain calls.
