Gill and Rohit smash centuries as India chase West Indies' record 405/7 in Guwahati
India captain Shubman Gill scored a 62-ball century — the fastest of his career — while Rohit Sharma became only the third Indian to reach 12,000 ODI runs, as the pair led India's chase of West Indies' record 405/7 in the second ODI in Guwahati.
West Indies post a record total
Batting first after being sent in, West Indies scored 405/7 in the second ODI against India in Guwahati — their highest-ever ODI total. For the first time in the team's history, and only the sixth time in ODI history overall, three West Indies batters scored centuries in the same innings: John Campbell made 101 off 68 balls (nine fours, five sixes), captain Shai Hope 104 off 94, and Amir Jangoo 114 off 77. Campbell and Hope added 110 for the second wicket, and Hope and Jangoo later put on 182. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each for India, while debutant Auqib Nabi conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs.
Gill's fastest century
Chasing 406, India captain Shubman Gill batted aggressively and reached his century in just 62 balls — the fastest hundred of his career. It is also the fastest century scored by an Indian captain in ODIs, surpassing Rohit Sharma's 63-ball century against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, and the fastest by an Indian against West Indies, beating Virender Sehwag's 69-ball hundred in Indore in 2011. Gill brought it up with a boundary off Alzarri Joseph. It was his 11th ODI century and his second in as many matches, following his 110 in the series opener.
Rohit reaches 12,000 ODI runs
Rohit Sharma reached fifty off 32 balls, including back-to-back sixes off Keemo Paul, and then reached 12,000 ODI runs with a single off Roston Chase in the 16th over — only the third Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, to do so. He got there in 282 innings, the second-fastest after Kohli's 242. The same innings took him past 200 ODI sixes on home soil, a first for any player worldwide. When the Gill-Rohit opening stand passed 230, Rohit was unbeaten on 99 off 71 balls (ten fours, six sixes); according to Outlook India, he went on to complete his century, finishing on 101 off 75 balls.
Series context
India led the series 1-0 going into this match after Virat Kohli's unbeaten 139 and Gill's 110 in the first ODI. The third and final match will be played in Mullanpur on October 3. Outlook India also reported that Kohli dropped a catch off Hope during West Indies' innings.
