Ģirts Jonkus becomes European champion in BMX cycling
Latvian BMX rider Ģirts Jonkus from Jelgava club “Mītavas kumeļi” has won the European Championship in the cruiser class for ages 45–49.

At the European BMX Championships held in France, Ģirts Jonkus claimed the title in the cruiser class for the 45–49 age group. Representing the Jelgava club “Mītavas kumeļi”, this was his first competition in this age category. He finished second in the first heat and semifinal but won the final, outpacing Hungarian Kristian Meszaros. After a one-year hiatus, he returned to the top step of the podium.
A total of ten athletes from Jelgava participated in the championship. Emīls Jekševics also made it to the final, finishing fourth in the 25–29 age group, while Armands Kāpiņš placed eighth in the 40–44 age group, according to Jelgava BMX coach Uldis Balbeks.
The European Championship featured 2,312 athletes, including 112 from Latvia, as reported by the Latvian Cycling Federation.
