Glasgow Crowd Cheers Scottish Athletes at Commonwealth Games
Scottish athletes including Chris Bennett and Megan Keith competed in front of a roaring Glasgow crowd, with Canadian hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg setting a Commonwealth record.
The Glasgow crowd provided enthusiastic support for Scottish athletes at the Commonwealth Games athletics events. In the women's 10,000m, Megan Keith was the only Scottish representative after McColgan withdrew, finishing ninth in 32:22.11 despite loud cheers. Canadian Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg impressed with a 80.97m hammer throw, a new Commonwealth record. Scottish hammer thrower Chris Bennett, competing in his fourth and final Games, finished fifth with 69.48m and was emotional after his 24-year career. Alexander Thomson, who trains locally and returned from knee surgery, placed ninth in the T38 100m final. In the 800m, Jemma Reekie advanced to the semi-finals with a 2:03.09 heat time, finishing second behind England's Georgia Hunter Bell. Erin Wallace also qualified in 2:03.15, while Mena Scatchard missed out by 0.06 seconds. In field events, Stephen Mackenzie qualified for the men's long jump final with a 7.75m leap, and Angela McAuslan-Kelly progressed in the women's hammer with a 60.59m throw.
