Raphaël Glucksmann has won the primary held to choose the French centre-left's candidate for the country's upcoming presidential election. According to information published on 11 October 2026, he received 66% of the vote, making him the social democratic camp's representative in the race for the French presidency.

The result

Around 140,000 people took part in the contest, which was organised to select a single social democratic candidate. Party leader Olivier Faure won 14% of the vote. Ségolène Royal, a former environment minister and a presidential candidate in 2007, received 7%.

The challenge ahead

Glucksmann now has to build support for the centre-left in a political landscape where the far right remains a major force. That camp is led by Marine Le Pen. The primary has settled who will carry the centre-left banner, but the wider contest for voters is only beginning.

The report on the winner was prepared by France 24 as part of its Spotlight programme, which profiles the man who wants to become president of France.
