Gonzalez becomes NFL's highest-paid cornerback after signing extension with Patriots

The New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed late Monday night to a four-year contract extension worth $135 million, according to ESPN and NBC Sports, citing multiple sources. The deal includes $102 million in guaranteed money.

The agreement makes the 24-year-old Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing the four-year, $132 million deal Devon Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks last month, which included more than $101 million guaranteed. Notably, both players share the same agent, Reggie Johnson.

Deal comes down to the wire

The extension was completed less than 48 hours before New England's regular-season opener against Seattle on Wednesday — a rematch of Super Bowl LX. Contract talks had dragged on for months, with Gonzalez expressing frustration on Aug. 25 that the situation remained unresolved. At the start of training camp, owner Robert Kraft said the team had offered a deal that would make Gonzalez the NFL's highest-paid cornerback, though Gonzalez later said there are different ways to measure that claim.

Gonzalez skipped most of the voluntary offseason program and participated only in low-tempo drills during mandatory minicamp, seen as a sign he was seeking a new contract. He suffered a lower-leg injury on Aug. 10 during a one-on-one drill against receiver A.J. Brown, but returned to practice Aug. 24 and traveled with the team to Seattle for Wednesday's game.

Career highlights

Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, has already been named to both an All-Pro and a Pro Bowl team. According to NBC Sports, he was a second-team AP All-Pro in 2024 and a Pro Bowler in 2025, recording 10 passes defensed in 14 regular-season games last year. In New England's four 2025 postseason games, he added seven passes defensed, a forced fumble and an interception.

ESPN notes that Gonzalez has shined in the biggest moments, intercepting a pass late in the AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos and recording four tackles and three passes defensed in the Super Bowl LX loss to Seattle. Including the postseason, he has four career interceptions.

Injuries have punctuated his career: a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum ended his rookie season 13 games early, a concussion cost him the 2024 regular-season finale, and a hamstring injury kept him out of the first three games of the 2025 season. He has started all 34 regular-season games he has played.

With the deal in place, Gonzalez is expected to continue as a starting cornerback alongside veteran Carlton Davis III, with Marcus Jones serving as the team's top slot option.
