Google sets September 21 pre-order date for new Googlebook laptops
Google has announced that pre-orders for its new Googlebook laptop line will open on September 21. The devices run an Android-based version of ChromeOS and include several AI-driven features.
Google has told people who signed up for updates that pre-orders for its upcoming Googlebook laptops will open on September 21 at 9AM ET. The same date is listed on the official Googlebook website, according to a report first noted by 9to5Google.
Google announced the Googlebook brand back in May, but has revealed relatively little officially about the devices since then. Googlebooks are positioned as a higher-end laptop line, with initial models coming from manufacturers that have previously built Chromebooks: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo.
An Android-based operating system
Unlike standard ChromeOS devices, Googlebooks will run a version of ChromeOS built on Android. Google's Gemini Intelligence sits at the core of this operating system.
New features
One notable feature is called Magic Pointer. Wiggling the cursor activates it, and aiming it at something on screen prompts the laptop to offer contextual suggestions for possible actions. Users will also be able to generate custom widgets.
GoogleGoogle also gave the devices a distinctive design touch: a "glowbar" on the laptop's lid. Googlebooks are additionally set to feature deep integration with Android phones.
