Google Docs still lacks dark mode on the web — here's how to work around it

While Google Docs has offered dark mode on mobile since 2020, the web version still doesn't support it natively. Users can rely on an experimental Chrome flag or browser extensions instead.

Google Docs remains one of the most widely used word processors, receiving frequent updates including recent Gemini-powered AI features. Yet one long-requested capability remains absent from the web version: dark mode.

A gap between mobile and web

Google introduced dark mode for Docs on mobile back in 2020, starting with Android before extending it to iOS. On mobile, users can enable it through the Settings menu, selecting the Theme option and choosing between Dark, Light, or System Default. No such option exists on the Google Docs website, and Google has not publicly explained why the feature has been limited to mobile platforms for so long.

Available workarounds

One option for web users is an experimental Chrome browser feature, accessible by typing "chrome://flags" into the address bar and searching for "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents." However, since these are experimental features, enabling them carries some risk to browser data and device security.

A safer alternative comes in the form of browser extensions, such as "Google Docs Dark Mode" on the Chrome Web Store or "DocsAfterDark" for Firefox. These free extensions automatically switch Google Docs into dark mode once installed. Users can further customize the look by clicking the extensions icon in the browser toolbar, where options to adjust color themes, sepia tone, contrast, grayscale, and brightness are typically available. Notably, such extensions generally disable dark mode automatically when printing, so documents still print in their standard light appearance.
