Google Earth Gets Nano Banana Image Generation

Google has integrated its Nano Banana image generation tool into Google Earth, enabling users to leverage artificial intelligence for visualizing locations. The company highlights several use cases for this feature.

One primary function is "visualizing the past." For instance, teachers can prompt the tool to create a "hyper-realistic view" of what the Pompeii ruins looked like in 78 AD. Google claims the algorithm will "instantly transform" modern ruins into a "bustling, colorful street scene from the Roman Empire." However, accuracy is questionable since there were no satellite cameras 2,000 years ago, making the images essentially guesses.

Nano Banana is also marketed for professional real estate planning. An example shows an empty Tokyo lot reimagined as a "vibrant shopping and retail district with open spaces." Google suggests this helps "clients see what's possible." Another application is visualizing building projects before construction, such as a "modern lakefront cabin built from sustainably sourced local materials."

Additionally, the tool can create custom infographics based on Google Earth locations. Using the Statue of Liberty as an example, Nano Banana generated an infographic with historical data including height and materials. It is unclear if this feature works on all locations or only prominent ones. Google notes that since this is AI, factual inaccuracies may occur. The integration is available immediately.
