Google has added file editing to its Gemini AI assistant, allowing users to generate, preview and modify documents right inside the chat. The feature is available to all Gemini users starting today.

Supported formats include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code. PDF previewing and editing works on both web and mobile, while all other formats are currently limited to the web version.

How it works

Earlier this year, Google added support for generating and downloading files in Gemini. Now those files can be changed without leaving the app. According to Google, documents can be expanded into full-screen mode for editing. Users can also highlight text in a file and ask Gemini questions about it or request changes. One example given is highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph.

Context

Gemini could already edit files through its integrations in Google Workspace apps, such as the Gemini bar in Google Docs. AI company Anthropic also launched a similar feature this year in its Claude chatbot, which lets users create and edit documents and presentations in chats.
