Google has added a new way for users to regain access to their accounts if they forget their password or lose an authenticator device. The feature allows signing in with a selfie video.

To use this option, users must set it up in advance. It is not compatible with all account types: it cannot be used for Workspace accounts, child accounts, or accounts enrolled in Google's Advanced Protection Program.

During setup, users must record a video that will be stored on Google's servers. The company states that the video will be encrypted and not used for other purposes unless the user opts in. There is an optional toggle in the setup flow that allows Google to use the selfie video to improve its facial recognition technology. A Google spokesperson confirmed that this toggle is not required for using the account recovery feature, and the video will not be used elsewhere if left unchecked.
