Google finally launches a native Gemini app for Windows

Google has rolled out a native version of its Gemini AI assistant for Windows 10 and 11 computers, giving users a dedicated desktop app rather than requiring them to access the tool through a browser. The release follows a similar Mac app that launched earlier this year.

Users can bring up the app instantly using the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space, mirroring the shortcut already available on Mac devices. This places Gemini assistance directly alongside other desktop apps without needing to search for it separately.

What the app offers

Google says the app is useful for everyday tasks such as quickly fact-checking a document or brainstorming title ideas for a presentation. It's worth keeping in mind that AI-generated output, including fact-checks, can still contain errors and may warrant independent verification.

The new app also connects with other Google AI products, including the agentic assistant Gemini Spark, to which tasks can be handed off. It works alongside familiar tools like Gmail and Google Drive as well. The app additionally supports generating images and videos through Nano Banana and Gemini Omni.

Google describes the app as lightweight and unobtrusive, saying it won't slow down a Windows PC's performance. The app is available to download now, and the company has indicated that more desktop-focused features are planned for the future.
