Google Commercial Reimagines Declaration of Independence with AI-Powered Collaboration
A new Google advertisement depicts the Founding Fathers using Google Workspace and AI tools to draft the Declaration of Independence, sparking mixed reactions online.

Two hundred and fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Google has released a new commercial that humorously reimagines the historic event with modern technology. The ad, with the tagline “Group project, but make it 1776,” shows Thomas Jefferson receiving a text from Ben Franklin, leading to a collaboration process using Google Docs, Calendar, Meet, and e-signatures. The commercial incorporates AI through Google’s “help me visualize” tool for designing the national seal, Gemini taking meeting notes, and the chatbot advising on declining King George III’s access request.
The ad adopts a light-hearted tone, with Sam Adams suggesting settling matters over beers. Unlike a previous controversial Google ad where a father used Gemini to write a fan letter for his daughter, this commercial avoids suggesting that AI would improve the actual text of the Declaration. However, the footage itself appears to have an AI-generated quality, adding to the theme.
Reactions on YouTube and Instagram have been mostly positive, but on Bluesky, the response has been critical. Commenters described the commercial as “cringey” and “stunningly tone deaf,” with the AI angle drawing the most criticism. Historian Angus Johnston noted that “amazing how little of this is actually AI,” and added that even in a fantasy joke, it’s impossible to argue that AI is useful for political organizing, writing, or human collaboration.
