Google Store trade-in program pays more for old phones than rivals
With the launch of the Pixel 11 lineup, Google is offering notably higher trade-in values for old phones than Best Buy, Apple or Amazon. Even older devices can bring in hundreds of dollars in credit.
Google's new Pixel 11 lineup has launched at a steep price — the base Pixel 11 starts at $899, while the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold starts at $1,900. Still, buyers trading in an old phone can significantly cut costs, since Google's trade-in values often beat those offered by competitors.
For instance, a 128GB Pixel 9 Pro XL, which launched in 2024 at $1,099, currently fetches only up to $255 at Apple, $310 at Amazon, or $300 at Best Buy. Through Google's program, the same device can bring in several hundred dollars more, and this pattern holds for many other models as well.
What old phones are worth
Trade-in value depends on the device's condition and can vary slightly depending on which Pixel 11 model is being purchased. Google accepts even very old devices, including the original Pixel ($100), the Galaxy S10 ($30) and the iPhone 6s Plus ($30). Somewhat newer devices fetch more — the Pixel 4a and Galaxy S20 are each valued at $150, and the iPhone 11 at $200. Newer models bring a much bigger return: $600 for a Pixel 10 Pro, $700 for a Galaxy S26 Ultra, and $550 for an iPhone 17.
While Google generally offers the best trade-in deals for Pixel devices, it's still worth comparing other retailers. Best Buy's trade-in rates tend to be lower but come with a gift card worth up to $350 when purchasing a Pixel device. Amazon, meanwhile, offers a choice between a gift card or a discount on the Pixel Watch 5.
How the trade-in process works
The process takes place through the Google Store, where buyers select their new phone, enter details about their old device, and confirm its condition. After checkout, Google provides instructions for preparing and shipping the old phone using a prepaid shipping kit. Some customers receive the discount upfront, while others get it refunded after the old device is received and inspected.
