Tech giant Google announced a significant update to its video creation tool, Google Vids. The new feature lets users create a personalized digital avatar that looks and sounds like them—simply by uploading a selfie and a voice recording. This move positions Google Vids as a competitor to other AI video tools such as HeyGen, Synthesia, and Captions.

Google Vids now also integrates the company's multimodal AI model, Gemini Omni. This allows users to create videos using a combination of a written prompt and reference images. Omni merges these inputs to produce the desired AI video. The tool can also swap backgrounds, fix lighting in videos recorded on a phone, and add effects. Additionally, Omni supports step-by-step edits, enabling users to make changes incrementally rather than starting over.

These enhancements transform Google Vids from an original AI-assisted workplace presentation tool into a comprehensive video creation platform. It remains part of Google Workspace, signaling its use for business purposes such as company updates or training videos. However, personalized avatars and conversational editing could position it in closer competition with specialized AI video startups.

Google notes that the new AI avatars are tied to the account holder's likeness and Google account, and are invisibly watermarked with SynthID. Access to personal avatars is limited to users aged 18 and older in certain regions.
