Google Wallet vs Samsung Wallet: which digital wallet suits Samsung phone owners?
Samsung Galaxy owners can choose between Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, with each offering distinct advantages in ID support, cross-device compatibility and security.
Owners of Samsung Galaxy smartphones have access to two competing digital wallet apps: Samsung's own Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet. Both let users store credit and debit cards, tickets, loyalty and membership cards, boarding passes, and digital keys for cars and homes, alongside certain forms of identification. Each app also allows users to add physical cards by photographing them with the camera, a feature Apple Wallet will only gain with iOS 27.
Digital ID and device compatibility
A key difference lies in digital ID support. Samsung Wallet's digital ID is recognized in eight US states, while Google Wallet's is accepted in eleven states plus Puerto Rico. California, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio and Puerto Rico recognize only Google Wallet, whereas West Virginia recognizes only Samsung Wallet.
Google Wallet also offers a web version and works on other Android devices running Android 9 or later, as well as Wear OS 2.18 and above, including smartwatches from other manufacturers. Samsung Wallet, by contrast, is exclusive to Samsung devices and cannot be used on phones such as Google's Pixel. Passes and cards in Google Wallet sync automatically across devices, and Gmail lets users pull tickets and passes directly from emails into the wallet.
Crypto and security
Samsung Wallet has an edge in cryptocurrency management, allowing users to link services such as Coinbase or Samsung's own Blockchain Wallet to view and manage digital assets from within the app. Both wallets offer comparable data encryption, though Samsung Wallet has a slight advantage thanks to its integration with Samsung Knox, which provides hardware-level security.
For those unable to pick one, there is nothing stopping users from running both apps side by side, using one as a backup for the other.
