GoPro Cameras: Which Models to Avoid and Must-Have Accessories
Wired experts advise against buying older GoPro models like the Hero 12, 11, and 10, as they are not significantly cheaper than the Hero 13 Black, and share tips on the best accessories and settings.

GoPro Models to Avoid
According to Wired, GoPro still sells the Hero 12, and older models like the Hero 11 and Hero 10 are commonly available online, often from unreliable sellers. These models are not recommended because their prices are usually close to the newer Hero 13 Black (around $350). The Hero 10 is particularly outdated; even at $200, it's a questionable purchase. The recommendation is to go with the Hero 13 Black.
Best GoPro Accessories
It's better to buy accessories based on actual needs rather than opting for a bundle right away.
- MicroSD Card (~$50): Use a V30 or UHS-3 rated card. Recommended: Samsung Pro Plus or SanDisk Extreme Pro.
- Media Mod ($100): Essential for improved audio, allowing connection of an external microphone (e.g., Rode Wireless). The Hero 12 and later support Bluetooth mics, but quality is poorer. For the new Mission 1 Pro, USB mics work without the Media Mod, but the mod adds HDMI output.
- Handlebar Mount ($40): Great for bikes, very sturdy, better than third-party options.
- Floaty ($35): Ideal for water activities, prevents loss if dropped. Note: the official Floaty doesn't fit the Mission 1 Pro, so third-party versions are needed.
- Selfie Stick ($80): 48-inch extension pole that collapses compactly. Works well as a monopod on soft ground.
- DaVinci Resolve Studio ($300): Video editing software that pairs well with GP-Log2 footage from the Mission 1 Pro.
Pro Tips for Better GoPro Use
- GoPro Labs Firmware: Free alternative firmware adding many features, like extended time-lapses.
- Increase Bitrate: The Hero 13 Black defaults to a lower bitrate. In ProTune, set it to "high" (100) or use Labs to go up to 200. This sharpens video but uses more battery and may cause overheating.
- Manual Exposure: Full control available on the Hero 13 Black. Use EV Comp (e.g., -1 for midday) and keep ISO low for better quality.
- Media Mod for Sound: Best way to get good audio without relying on Bluetooth mics.
Is Now a Good Time to Buy?
Wired suggests yes. GoPro recently launched the Mission 1 series, and there's no sign of a Hero 14. Typically, new Hero models are announced late September/early October, but given the new Mission 1 line, a new Hero may not arrive this autumn.
