GoPro CEO Assures Customers: Camera-Making Remains Core Business After Starman Deal

GoPro CEO Nick Woodman sent a letter to customers reassuring them that building cameras remains the company's core mission following the proposed $285 million merger with Starman. The letter makes no mention of YouTuber Markiplier, who recently became GoPro's largest individual shareholder.

GoPro founder and CEO Nick Woodman has published a letter addressed to the company's customers and fan community, aiming to ease concerns following this week's announcement of a proposed $285 million merger with Starman. Woodman insists that producing top-tier cameras for consumers and professionals remains the company's "core DNA" and will never change.

According to Woodman, the merger will strengthen GoPro financially, positioning it to invest more heavily in innovation and the advancement of content-creation technology. He states that Starman shares GoPro's passion for the brand and its commitment to developing market-leading products. The letter also highlights that GoPro has amassed more than 2,500 patents over its 24-year history, which he presents as evidence of continuous innovation that will carry on after the merger.

Woodman explains that the broader goal is to turn GoPro into a more diversified, financially stronger company, enabling it to deliver new cameras, smarter accessories, and more capable software and services for capturing, editing, and sharing content. He promises continued improvements to existing products alongside new tools for users.

When the merger was first announced, GoPro also said it would work with Starman on matters of national security involving cameras, optics, and AI infrastructure — a point not addressed in this customer-facing letter.

Notably absent from Woodman's message is any reference to YouTuber Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, who became GoPro's largest individual shareholder shortly before the acquisition was announced.
