New releases: a study of recent Latvian literature and a Nobel laureate's novel in Latvian

The publishing house of the University of Latvia's Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art has released a collective monograph examining recent developments in Latvian literature between 2016 and 2024. The volume was compiled by poet and literary scholar Artis Ostups and brings together perspectives from researchers and practitioners in the field.

According to Ostups, the book's chapters are meant to serve as a kind of map, helping readers find their way through contemporary literature before it shifts again along with reality itself. The publisher has priced the monograph at 15 euros.

A Nobel laureate's novel arrives in Latvian

Separately, publisher Zvaigzne ABC has released a Latvian translation of 'The Vegetarian,' a novel by South Korean author Han Kang, who received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel has been translated into more than 35 languages and has sold several million copies worldwide.

The story follows Yeong-hye, a woman whose seemingly ordinary life with her husband changes after she decides to become a vegetarian. It explores themes of personal freedom and social pressure, alongside violence, resistance, bodily autonomy, and the boundary between normalcy and madness.

The Latvian edition is available both in print and as an e-book, priced by the publisher at 12.99 euros.
