Three climbers lost their lives on Italy's Gran Paradiso mountain on Saturday, January 27. The mountain rescue service reported that their bodies were found at an altitude of about 3,600 meters on the northern side of the mountain. The exact circumstances of death are still under investigation, but it is believed the climbers died from a fall.

The group had started their ascent on Saturday morning after spending the night in a mountain hut. When they did not return by evening, an alarm was raised. Two of the victims are Italian citizens; the nationality of the third has not been disclosed.

Gran Paradiso is located in the eponymous national park near the French border. It is considered one of the easiest 4,000-meter peaks in the Alps, but climbing it still requires excellent physical and technical preparation.
