Greece stuns Slovenia at men's volleyball European Championship
Greece's men's volleyball team pulled off a surprise 3-1 win over Slovenia at the European Championship in Modena, upsetting a side that won Nations League bronze earlier this year. Greece had previously managed to win only a single set against the Czech Republic and Italy.
One of the biggest upsets so far at the men's volleyball European Championship in Modena saw Greece defeat Slovenia 3-1 (25:18, 19:25, 25:23, 25:20), stunning a team that has regularly contended for medals in recent years and claimed Nations League bronze this summer.
Slovenia had opened the tournament's group stage strongly, beating both Slovakia and Sweden 3-0. Greece, by contrast, had struggled coming into the match, managing to win just a single set combined against the Czech Republic and hosts Italy — though against Italy the Greeks did push both opening sets to 23 points.
How the match unfolded
Greece dominated the first set while Slovenia took the second, leaving the outcome to be decided later in the match. In the third set, Slovenia pulled ahead 17:14, but Greece held firm, coming back from 21:23 down and winning four straight rallies to retake control and claim the set. In the fourth set, Greece raced to a 5:1 lead before briefly falling behind 5:7, then regained the initiative and closed out the match comfortably.
Slovenia's Nik Mujanović was the match's top scorer with 20 points, while Greece's Dimitris Mouchlias led his team with 12.
Greece will next face Sweden in what is described as a crucial match for their tournament hopes.
