An 82-year-old man has died following a violent altercation on a beach in Greece, according to local media reports. The incident occurred at Vouliagmeni beach near Athens after a disagreement broke out over the use of a sunlounger.
Witnesses say the dispute escalated into a physical fight that eventually drew in other people at the scene. One witness told the newspaper Kathimerini that the commotion was so intense that screaming could be heard from the far end of the beach.
Younger man arrested
The other man involved, aged 76, has reportedly been arrested. A 21-year-old woman who was with him at the time was also detained but was later released. Witnesses cited by the newspaper Ta Nea said the woman's face was bloodied and swollen.
During the confrontation, the 82-year-old man collapsed. Reports indicate he was given CPR and treated with a defibrillator before an ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Another witness said the victim appeared to have been waiting for other people and had reserved the sunlounger in question, which seems to have triggered the initial argument.
Authorities are now investigating both what caused the physical fight and what ultimately led to the man's death.
