Greek police probe death of 82-year-old man after sunlounger brawl
Greek police are investigating the death of an 82-year-old man who suffered a suspected cardiac arrest during a fight over a scarce sunlounger at a popular beach near Athens.
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the death of an 82-year-old man following a violent altercation over a sunlounger at Vouliagmeni, a well-known beach on the Athenian riviera.
According to officials, the man arrived at the beach before 10am on Sunday hoping to secure a lounger. When it became clear loungers were scarce, he got into an argument with a 76-year-old man he did not know. The dispute escalated into a physical fight, which state broadcaster ERT reported drew in other people accompanying the 76-year-old.
The victim, who had come to the beach with his wife, was seriously injured during the scuffle and is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed by ambulance to Asklepieion hospital in Voula, but died around 11am despite medical efforts. A post-mortem examination was ordered immediately.
Police arrested the 76-year-old man and, initially, a 21-year-old woman who was with him. The manager of the beach resort was also detained for questioning.
A source close to the investigation described the incident as unprecedented, noting that disputes in Greece are typically loud verbal exchanges rather than physical fights — especially between two elderly men — which is part of why the case has shocked the public.
Wider context
Like much of Europe, Greece is grappling with a severe cost of living crisis that has increased social tension, which has been partly blamed for a rise in domestic disputes and other conflicts. There has also been growing public frustration in recent years over private operators occupying prime coastal spots with expensive sunloungers, in a country where the sea holds deep cultural significance.
Authorities said everyone involved in the incident would be brought before a magistrate.
