Greeks Outraged Over Nolan's 'Odyssey' Casting: No Greek Actors

Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of Homer's epic 'The Odyssey' has stirred controversy in Greece. Greeks, proud of their cultural heritage, feel a special claim to these ancient stories. The casting, especially a Black actress as Helen of Troy and the absence of Greek actors, has drawn widespread criticism.

American entrepreneur Elon Musk took to social media, accusing Nolan of desecrating Homer and succumbing to woke ideology to win an Oscar. Greek media have hosted debates where historians and directors either defended the creative freedom or rejected the choices as unacceptable.

Greece's small opposition party 'Niki' objected to the casting and the state's €6.5 million subsidy, arguing that taxpayers are forced to fund the imposition of woke ideology on Greek history. The party leader criticized the government for suppressing national identity.

In contrast, Greece's Culture Minister Lina Mendoni defended creative freedom, stating that the state has no right to dictate how an artist interprets a myth. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, however, said Nolan went too far and doubted the film would win an Oscar.

Despite the disputes, the film, with a $250 million budget, was partially shot in Greece, showcasing iconic sites. The premiere on July 16 saw tickets selling out rapidly, and bookstores report increased demand for Homer's epic.
