Gryphon: Ukrainian Forces Drop Ground Robots Deep Behind Russian Lines Using Drones

The «NC13» unit of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade has developed the «Gryphon» tactic, in which heavy bomber drones deliver kamikaze ground robots 5–15 kilometres into the Russian rear. More than 100 such operations have been carried out since January.

The «NC13» unit of strike ground robotic systems, part of Ukraine's 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, first tested a new tactic deep behind Russian lines in January this year. Since then it has carried out more than 100 similar operations, turning an experiment into an established combat system.

The tactic is named «Gryphon» after a serviceman from the unit who went missing in 2023 during a combat mission near Andriivka in Donetsk region.

How it works

Heavy bomber drones deliver small kamikaze ground robots into the enemy rear, 5–15 kilometres from the front. After landing, the robots continue towards their targets. They can be used against key positions, logistics and personnel, while also causing disorganisation behind enemy lines. Unit commander Mykola Zinkevych, callsign «Makar», says 10–15 kilometres is not the maximum range, but he cannot disclose exact figures.

The first operation took place about eight months ago: two robots were dropped 15 kilometres deep to destroy an enemy personnel assembly point. According to the commander, in one case the tactic helped disrupt a Russian mechanised assault, as the enemy believed a sabotage group had broken through.

Operation «Vivaldi»

A year ago «NC13» drew international attention when Ukrainian forces took Russian positions without infantry, using only robots and drones. The tactic is now part of the Third Army Corps' operation «Vivaldi». Ukrainian forces have liberated 176 square kilometres since the offensive began. The Office of the President says Russian losses exceeded 5,000 over the first three stages, and 250 Russian soldiers have been captured. Roughly 80% of logistics and 90% of wounded evacuations were handled by ground robots.

Zinkevych argues that Western partners do not fully grasp how much the battlefield has changed, and promised further new tactics before the end of 2026.
