After Closure of Grīva Prison, State No Longer Needs It, Daugavpils Only with Funding
Grīva Prison in Daugavpils will be closed by the end of the year; inmates will be transferred to the new Liepāja prison. The building will no longer be needed by the Ministry of Justice, and Daugavpils municipality is unwilling to take it over without additional funding.

Grīva Prison in Daugavpils still houses inmates, including those serving life sentences. However, by the end of the year, the facility will be closed, and prisoners will be moved to the newly built Liepāja Prison. After the transfer, the building will become surplus to the requirements of the Ministry of Justice. Meanwhile, the Daugavpils local government is not prepared to assume management of the property without extra financial support. Discussions are ongoing regarding the future use of the site, but without state funding, the city considers the burden too heavy.
